Beauty beyond accessory

Fashion designer Shilpi Gupta, who’s also the founder and creative director of her fashion label, fathoms: “A craftsman or a designer doesn’t think of a creation as a small accessory anymore.”

It’s the pair of skilled hands that will labour over making the item with love, the stories embedded in the stones, the woman who will carry it to a wedding and perhaps pass it on to future generations someday as a familial legacy or heirloom — all this and much more are taken into account. “That’s not merely a product but something closer to a sculpted piece or a jewellery line. You might ask, is that a purse or an ornament? The fact that it also holds your phone is almost incidental,” she chips in.

This concept is quite a departure in the sense that it transcends the boundaries of routine, hackneyed consumption — cruising towards inimitable aesthetics, deft construction, pure originality, bonafide artistry as well as durability of an asset beyond a period.

A statement piece

“For today’s woman, a bag carries different aspects of her life, from professional commitments to personal moments. A well-designed bag has the ability to spin a yarn of sagas through its texture and detailing. Much like jewellery, it has a close relationship with the person who wears it and becomes a part of her persona,” enlightens Revathi Kant, chief design officer at Titan Company. The house boasts of the brand IRTH to redefine luxury.

Wearable art

Are bags becoming an adornment, part of the whole getup nowadays?

Bags are now an indispensable ingredient of personal styling. There is an inseparable connect between jewellery and handbags today. Both have the ability to transform a look and reflect one’s individuality.

“Sometimes, a bag complements an ensemble quietly and at other times, it becomes the hero piece around which the entire look is built. Intricacies like hardware, handles, textures, embroidery and decorations are being approached with the same sensitivity as jewellery designs. A thoughtfully created bag determines how a person feels when tagging it along,” comments Kant.

Collaborations with contemporary artists and painters, collectable items and unique, experimental shapes highlight bags as unconventional art exhibits. A handbag today encapsulates creativity and personal stories, thus building its category as an inspiring space for design.

Today’s consumers seek bags that weave a narrative through rare materials, emotion, handmade techniques and a distinct point of view. From sculptural silhouettes to limited-edition assortments, bags now reflect similar principles seen in art. Clubbing fashion, design and art — make-up pouches and tiny money-storage kits emerge as a noticeable extension of personal identity.

“I think this is a beautiful evolution,” echoes Gupta.

“Traditionally, jewellery was the embellishment — the thing that lifted an outfit and gave it its character. Today, bags are stepping into that zone, especially in the context of bridal, festive and occasion dressing,” she adds ahead.

When a bride carries a gemstone potli, it functions almost like a jewel within her entire look, contributing a sparkle to her journey of new life. It reflects a fresh beginning as a supple green leaf of a sapling. It’s not added as an afterthought but integrally entrenched into the whole composition, suggest jewellery aficionados.

“Styling fables are also being retold. Women are now building looks around their bag, not adding a bag to a look. That’s a significant change in how we think and present ourselves,” opines Gupta.

Material mix

Handbags of the fairer sex are being created with diverse materials.

Designers are thinking out of the box to excavate mediums for their outlandish handbags. It’s a treasure-trove of sorts and an exciting area in the designing discipline. Various materials are toyed with to carve out otherworldly models of handbags that seem straight out of fantasy scripts and dream sequences. It’s not just about the physical properties of the fabrics sewn or the tangibility of materials used seamlessly in bag creations but it’s the wealth of memorable experiences lived through while shaping up a bag.

Age-old materials such as leather and textiles apart, woven surfaces, raffia, suede, metallic finishes, acrylic, resin, glass like options, namely beads, crystals, recycled materials and eco-friendly, responsible alternatives are doing the rounds. Many have evolved into strong fashion statements from seasonal materials because of their handcrafted and organic appeal.

Handbags that capture the intersection of fashion, design and art are contemplated as eye-catching collectibles. They are defined by their offbeat material choices to mull over, thus drawing a clear line of distinction between the extraordinary and the ordinary. A lot of silk brocades, velvets, metallic structures, hand-woven textiles, crystal embellishments, pearls and natural stones are incorporated into bag making.

“I work extensively with precious and semi-precious gemstones, real gold and silver zari, handcrafted metallic embroidery and couture-level embellishment techniques that are more commonly associated with fine jewellery than with bags,” informs Gupta.

“People are looking for materials that communicate authenticity. You can feel the hours of handwork devoted to crafting out rare specimens. And that’s increasingly what the serious luxury consumer is paying for,” she further reveals.

Handicrafts

Truckloads of fabrics, motifs and embroidery are found in today’s exceptional bags.

There is a renewed appreciation for surface craftsmanship laden with captivating embellishments in handbags today. Designers are bringing together traditional techniques and contemporary silhouettes to create pieces that feel both rooted and modern.

Fabrics and surfaces like silk, brocade, velvet, denim, crochet, macramé, canvas and textured textiles are explored far and wide. Embellishments such as beadwork, sequins, metallic thread embroidery, mirror work, zardozi-inspired techniques, pearls, crystals, appliqué and three dimensional surface detailing are also becoming important design elements in fashioning accessory hardware. Current trends show a larger movement towards beaded, sequined and highly tactile handbags that add individuality to styling. The beauty of thread, texture and tangible details becomes central to the product story.

There’s been a wonderful return to heritage craftsmanship, partly because consumers are genuinely hungry for cultural authenticity at present.

In terms of textiles, silk brocades, velvet, Chanderi, raw silk, organza, handwoven heritage fabrics are making waves. These are materials with history and character. The motifs are drawn from botanical forms, celestial imagery, royal decorative arts, architectural details, jewellery traditions — references that feel timeless rather than trend-led.

Embellishment techniques include zardozi, dabka, naqshi, pearl embroidery, gemstone setting, metallic threadwork, crystal work — crafts that have existed for centuries and survived the ravages of time are now being reimagined through a contemporary prism.

“What excites me most is the convergence happening between jewellery craftsmanship and textile artistry. Bags are emerging as genuine heirloom objects — things you don’t just wear but keep, cherish and eventually pass down to posterity. That’s the space I find most compelling to work in,” wraps up Gupta.

Bag a special date with bags that spring a surprise:

Opt for funky bags with a quirky twist in a tapestry of handmade tales of knitted, crochet or macramé variety in the shape of a house, a round ball or other geometric dimensions. Besides, 3-D cartoon bags, bags imitating grapes or an apple box bag (mistaken for a supermarket crate), a sadhya bag reprising the Kerala sadhya (vegetarian banquet meal served on a banana leaf), a walnut-shell clutch bag, a heart shaped bag, a brown suede minaudière shaped like a pear, an artichoke clutch, a premium masala brand packet bag fully composed of colourful beads, a rare vase-shaped bag with a bouquet of flowers, a bug shaped evening bag, a lemon-shaped brass minaudière with a crinkled surface, tight hook and a long chain strap are indeed some of the high-fashion gems selling like hot cakes in the alluring luxury segment.

A slew of ladies’ bags and purses with interesting shapes and designs are trending now:

There are some really compelling directions happening worldwide right now that fashion pundits admit of bumping into.

Jewellery-inspired evening bags are huge — pieces that borrow from the language of fine jewellery, using gemstones, pearls, crystals and intricate metalwork and finishes. Then there are sculptural minaudières importing ideas from nature, architecture and decorative arts — almost like wearable objects or brooches rather than bags.

“Heritage-driven potlis elevated via a contemporary design lens are having their moment under the sun too, which is close to my heart obviously. Alongside these, treasure-box silhouettes and bags derived from vanity-cases are indeed making a visible resurgence. They carry that sense of nostalgia and ritual with deep resonance,” instances Gupta.

Gupta confesses of clearly noticing “their consumers gravitating towards pieces that have great heirloom potential or the unfading glow of familial inheritance. They’re asking: will I still love this precious piece in 20 years? Can I gift this to my daughter?”

The focus is shifting towards bags that create an aura of curiosity and vital talking points. Globally, strappy or strapless bags in different forms are becoming the defining feature with their sculptural splendours divinely moulded by art and architecture.

“We are also seeing the rise of much-coveted jewellery-inspired clutches, metallic bags and embellished evening bags that use crystals, beads and intricate detailing, thus making them scintillate almost like adornments,” chips in Kant.

Another significant trend is the demand for natural textures and craftsmanship. Raffia-inspired bags, woven surfaces and artisanal wonders are being reinterpreted in myriad ways with a contemporary touch. These textures bring warmth, tactility and a handcrafted quality to modern accessories.

Some sculptural forms like the Swipe bag (curvy, oval-shaped handbag created by the Parisian fashion brand Coperni), crystal- kissed mini bags, playful concepts and nature-inspired pieces, such as Ark bag (Cult Gaia brand’s half-moon or crescent shaped clutch or tote bag made of slatted bamboo or acrylic) are among the key drivers on the trendmill.
