Going miles
Has
denim evolved from the casual category with actors, entertainment hosts or
industrial magnates slipping into denim jeans and jackets as officewear even
for formal meetings, launches and presentations?
“Denim doesn’t just come a long way; it mirrors the times. It is the ultimate fashion chameleon, permanently relevant and entirely reinvented for every season we experience,” enlightens Umashan Naidoo, head customer and beauty at Trent Ltd, a popular Indian retail company that operates major fashion and lifestyle brands like Westside, among others.
Fashion designer Jasminum Kaur too nods to this idea saying that “denim has irrefutably crossed the casualwear segment to get introduced to semi-formal and professional fashion arenas and is widely accepted there when styled well.”
“Discernibly, denim has broken rules by surmounting certain classified zones. This was predictable as fashion shifts from haute couture to corporate culture, from casual to formalwear. At its core, the law of denim is rooted in a rock-and-roll, rebel energy. The moment you familiarise it with office attire, a ceremonial function or a high-glam setting, you are already rewriting the preset norms of fashion, which is precisely what makes it work,” avers Naidoo.
He mentions that for “a wardrobe execution that transcends gender, nothing beats the friction of opposites.” For instance, “a crisp cotton shirt paired with well-washed denim and a tailored blazer is a deadly combo. Better still, opt for a classic navy denim number to steer a workspace effort or pivot your style wheel to pristine white for an impressive night out,” he instructs.
Dazzling Media Darlings
Gorgeous fashion divas of international fame, namely Kendall Jenner,
Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma
Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham to our desi girls Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor,
Katrina Kaif are all glued to denims like their second skin. From airport looks
to promos to visiting sets for shoot to snipping ribbons at brand endorsements,
these ravishing celebs know how to draw shutterbugs for that stunning click
moment. They live in and swear by the smart, durable denimwear.
Brandwagon
Premium denim jeans brands cater to a larger cross-section of customers,
fitting into different styles, budgets, types and textures — ranging from
classic fits, heritage labels to luxury designer tags.
Major global brands like Levi's, Lee and Wrangler are synonymous for
their make, craft, construction and haute appeal. They offer high-quality
textiles and hip-and-happening silhouettes with A1 branding. Pepe Jeans, Jack
& Jones and American Eagle unveil their line of present-day, trendy denims
targeting the youth — their vibe, culture and preferences.
Back home, Spykar, Flying Machine and Killer are manufacturing some
top-notch stuff in denim, thus dishing out a diverse range of washes and cuts
to select from.
Durability
Wash denim inside out in cold water, avoid over-washing
the material and air-dry it to retain its lifespan, colour as well as the
fabric quality, especially during hot spells that often rob of the original hue
due to unbearable heat with the harmful effects of ultraviolet
(UV) rays.

Summer coolers
·
Many
people just live in denim as they find it too comfortable and convenient to
carry.
·
Rack
raiders eye wide-leg jeans, straight-fit jeans, denim skirts, denim shorts,
sleeveless denim tops, lightweight denim shirts and denim joggers to flaunt
this time around.
·
Stress-free
silhouettes and lighter washes are particularly preferred during warmer phases
when the temperature peaks to intolerable degrees.
·
For
women, relaxed-fit jeans, denim dresses, skirts and sleeveless shirts work
best, whereas for men, lightweight denim shirts, straight-fit jeans and denim
shorts are exemplary summer picks.
Denim dyes
·
It’s a colour shower on the denim dais this
season. White, ecru, cream, beige and light blue
denim reflects the heat instead of absorbing it. Muted denim shades return the
sunlight better than a dark palette.
·
However, for clotheshorses, style comes first
before anything else. They flinch no inch to cull deeper tints for their
collection.
·
Darker
denim tinges like deep indigo, charcoal grey, vintage black, dark olive and
rich navy are trending now as they look sharper and more elevated.
·
Clean
blues, subdued tones and profound indigos continue to dominate, keeping the denim
aesthetic timeless rather than fad-driven.
·
Women
can pair their denim jeans with cotton shirts, crop tops, kurtas or blazers, while men can style denim with polos, oversized
tees, linen shirts or crisp white shirts.
·
Also,
a clean tank top in classic white, slate grey or rich brown can team up well
with denim bottoms.
·
Couple a light-wash denim trouser with a
white T-shirt or an oversized, airy blouse.
Supporting cast
·
Accessories
like leather belts, layered chains, hats, oversized sunglasses and stacks of
thick bangles for girls complement denim beautifully.
·
Apt
hardware can elevate any silhouette to unexpected heights.
·
A
statement belt anchored by a substantial, oversized buckle can make a world of
difference.
Kids’ corner
· Denim has also entered the kidswear segment as a cupboard essential for the playgrounds, on excursion trips, as an occasionwear or during vacations.
· It has invaded the childwear section because it is long-lasting, stretchy, pleasant to look at, easy to slip in, cosy to feel and touch, highly travel-friendly for its elastic quality and apt for both casual and formal dressing.
· Denim is a borderless, ageless clothing item that can be designed and manufactured for all.
· What is being witnessed today in adult contemporary fashion is quickly getting translated down to the Gen Alpha and toddlers tomorrow, thus proving the fabric’s universal reach and acceptability.
